4 Ingredient DIY Lip Balm

I don’t know about you, but I am quite particular about my lip balm, especially the scent. So when I needed a refill, I was looking for a natural and minimal-waste packaging option and with my research, learned that it is so easy to just make your own and customize it exactly how you like it.

I have to say, I am so impressed with this recipe! Keep on reading to find out how to make your own.

You will need:

  • 1.5 Tbsp Beeswax

I bought my beeswax pellets from Community Natural Foods but there are also a lot of great places to buy beeswax like The Beehive in Kensington. You can also buy a block and grate it or if you want a vegan option, you can use Candelilla or soy (but I haven’t tried this so let me know how it works out if you do). Note: If you are using tub containers I suggest using less beeswax (just 1 Tbsp) for a softer consistency but I made both and it worked great with 1.5 Tbsp.

  • 1 Tbsp – Coconut Oil

I buy my organic coconut oil in a large tub from Costco.  My aim is to live as plastic-free as possible and this is in a plastic container but since it’s so big, it lasts at least 3-4 months and It seems worth it for me instead of a bunch of smaller containers for the same price.

  • 1 Tbsp Shea Butter

You can find Shea Butter at many different natural food/ health stores but I actually found mine on sale at Winners. I love that this brand, Out Of Africa, comes in a tin (which you can reuse after) and, because it’s Raw-African Shea, it naturally has vitamin E in it which is great for your lips and skin.

  • 10-12 drops of Essential Oil (Any kind you want)

I have made both peppermint and cinnamon and both turned out amazingly!

  • Containers. This recipe makes about 6 lip balms. You can order some online, buy them from craft stores, or reuse old containers/mint tins/travel size jars. Get creative! I used plastic ones from Community Natural Foods as they were all I could find in a hurry but, next time, I plan on ordering tin ones that I can use over and over again like these from Amazon.
  • A double boiler or a pyrex in a pot to melt the wax and oils
  • A spoon to stir the ingredients
  • A flat tray, plate, or cutting board to transfer the containers from the counter to the fridge.

Step 1- Melt Beeswax in the double boiler stirring regularly (make sure to do the wax first as it takes way longer to melt with the other oils in with it)

Step 2 – Add in the Coconut Oil and Shea Butter stirring regularly until it’s all melted

Step 3 – Remove from heat and stir in Essential Oils of your choice

Step 4 – place containers open on your tray or plate and carefully pour the liquid into the containers

Step 5 – place them in the refrigerator for about 20 mins to set

And there you have it! I hope you enjoy this DIY. Make sure to leave me a comment below letting me know what you think and what scents you experimented with.
