What is a Natural Mattress? (And why it is important for your overall health)

What do you get when a kinesiologist and a cabinet maker come together to create a new product?  An amazing, locally made bed that is designed with your (and the environments) health in mind.

I meet with Mark Lootens who told me all about what he, and his business partner Andrew Moir, do at Natural Mattress and why a Natural Mattress is an important thing to think about when shopping for your next good night sleep.

What is wrong with my mattress?

Most standard mattresses are made with polyester and polyurethane materials which are full of toxins and bacteria (think about it like the sponge sitting by your kitchen sink. GROSS!). Those memory foam mattresses are made with tons of chemicals, around 5-6 lbs. of glue and designed to be made as fast and as cheap as possible.  This can be a huge issue for people with respiratory problems, allergies, back pain and people who have trouble staying cool when they sleep.

How is a Natural Mattress different?

Custom and made-to-order with natural materials like: Latex (made from the sap of a rubber tree), wool, and coconut (yes coconut, so cool right?) and their mattress cases are made from hemp fabric.  All of these materials were chosen because they are durable, antimicrobial (resistant to bacteria) and environmentally friendly. There are also options with pocket coils for added support and steel coils which are great for kids because they have added air flow to help keep that mattress cool and dry.

4 Reasons why you should buy your next mattress from Natural Mattress:

  • Health
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Quality
  • Supporting a local business

What makes Natural Mattress environmentally friendly?

Natural Mattresses are designed to last a long time (over 10 years). They come with a 100 day guarantee which means they can go back in and change your mattress if it is too hard or too soft and they all come with a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty  which means you can fix instead of just replace your mattress when it needs some TLC (TEN YEARS! This is almost the entire lifespan of the mattress), and all their mattresses are made from biodegradable and recyclable materials. Natural Mattress will also take your old mattress, break it down, and properly recycle it for you. Thanks Guys!

How much is this going to cost me?

A Natural Mattress can be made to fit many different budgets. Most Queen sized mattresses run from about $1500-$3000 and the Twin/Kids beds run around $800.

What do you want people to know about Natural Mattress?

  • (Natural Mattress believes in) “Local, 1 on 1 interaction with the producer and customer.”
  • “We want to create a product that will last longer (and we want to) get it right!”
  • “The biggest thing we are trying to get out to people is that we are trying to make a healthier mattress, a more sustainable mattress and we want to make the mattress that is right for them, not just the fastest cheapest way”

P.S. Also check out the amazing Bed Frames that Andrew builds to go with the beds. I dream about those beautiful wooden headboards!
